Vacations in North America – What’s in Central USA?

If you asked 100 people what there was to do in the central part of the country, the answers would be on both sides of the spectrum. After all, we all have our opinions on what the “central” area should be considered. In our opinion, you can take everything from North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin, then head all the way down to Texas, Louisiana, and possibly even New Mexico.

Whatever the case may be, there are plenty of things to do each state. Here is a list that could help you plan your next vacation:

North Dakota: One of the main attractions here is being able to take a romantic or family horseback riding tour. Guides will lead you down various trails full of history and nostalgia. It’s definitely a place for people who love the outdoors.

Minnesota: If you love to shop, the world’s largest mall (Mall of America) resides in Minnesota.

Wisconsin: We definitely consider Wisconsin to be a family vacation. Whether you head to La Crosse or Dells, there are plenty of activities for everyone. You can take on wizard quests, head to where the first ice cream sundae was made, or even go as a couple and visit the tallest six-pack or head to the museum of historic torture devices.

Iowa: From the air this looks like a bunch of flat roads and cornfields, but there are tons of activities in Iowa. You can visit the historic town of Winterset (where John Wayne was born), Ledges State Park in Worth Township, or experience the Victorian period at the Jordan House.

Nebraska: Our first visit here some 20 years ago was to experience the College World Series in Omaha. Over the years there have been other areas to help make this an enjoyable vacation spot. Lincoln is well-known for their NCAA football team (the Cornhuskers), but places like James Vineyards can bring about a new vacation. You can also visit the historic Haymarket, as well as all the parks and museums along the way.

Kansas: One of the most popular stories behind the state of Kansas was its ability to bring people from the West. You will find a plethora of forts and trails here that have decades of history attached to them. Plus, the world’s largest ball of twine can be found here.

Missouri/Oklahoma/Arkansas: These three states provide of history, especially Missouri. Whether we’re talking about the Oregon Trail or when the Mormons resided there, there is plenty to learn during your stay. Oklahoma takes a trip back into American-Indian culture, but also provides modern day activities like casinos. Arkansas is full of Civil War sites, as well as a substantial amount of outdoor activities.

Texas and Louisiana give us everything from New Orleans to Dallas. You can experience old western history, take a vacation during Mardi Gras, or learn more about the different cultures in the area. Plus, you can see where John F. Kennedy was assassinated, try some of the best cuisines, and enjoy various genres of music.

We’ve only scratched the surface of things to do in the central part of the United States. Hopefully this will get your juices flowing and provide a few ideas on how to vacation in the middle of the country.<
